Common Questions
What Long Island Homeowners Ask Us
Most Suffolk County homeowners land between $8,000 and $22,000 before rebates, and the spread is real. Ductwork condition, system size, and efficiency tier move the number more than the brand does. An air conditioner alone does not qualify for the PSEG Long Island rebate, but a heat pump that becomes your primary heat does, at a flat $4,000 to $7,500 by income tier.
Two tests. If the system is 15 years or older, replacement is usually the better spend, and most central air on Long Island lasts 12 to 18 years. Then use the 50 percent rule: if the repair costs more than half of a replacement, replace it. Still running R-22 refrigerant is its own reason, since it has not been manufactured in the US since 2020 and now runs past $100 a pound.
Only a high-temperature air-to-water heat pump does, and yes, it works with the radiators you already have. Standard heat pumps make warm air, and older air-to-water models topped out near 120 degrees, too cool for cast iron sized for boiler water. The Daikin Altherma we install produces water up to 158 degrees, so your existing radiators and baseboard stay put and the boiler goes away. We are one of a small number of certified Altherma installers on Long Island.
It depends on whether you keep your existing radiators or move to ducted or ductless heat. Both paths are real conversions and both qualify for the PSEG Long Island heat pump rebate, a flat $4,000 to $7,500 by income tier once the heat pump becomes your primary heat. We price the conversion against what you are spending on oil now so you can see the annual difference before deciding.
We do, across Patchogue and the Suffolk County towns within about 10 miles. An AC that runs a few minutes and stops is short cycling, and the cause is often a clogged air filter, a frozen coil, or a dirty outdoor unit, all of which you can check yourself at no cost first. If it keeps doing it, our diagnostic is a flat $129 with no separate trip fee. Call or text 631-209-7090.
The biggest single lever for most homes here is what you heat with. If you are on oil or electric resistance heat, a heat pump cuts heating cost substantially, and on the conversions we have documented heating costs came down roughly 34%. Beyond equipment, PSEG Rate 580 takes 45% off electric usage above 400 kWh a month from October through May for homes heating with a heat pump. That is a rate discount, not a rebate.
